There is a seasonal saying in German: “Der April macht was er will”. The sentiment of this idiom is “April showers bring May flowers”, but it literally translates to “April is gonna do what it wants”. Well, speaking of doing stuff in April, let's look at what we've been up to in our busiest month so far building new.space!
The big launch in April was Notes
You can visit new.space/note to create a new Space with a new note, ready to type. I use this every Friday to create a new Space for our weekly team sync meeting, and put a short agenda in the note. Then I add the zoom link, other links and resources, and then post the space’s link to our internal chatroom. We wrote some about our favorite use-cases, and built a cool page highlighting some of its superpowers. We hope you are finding notes just as useful as we are 💪Let’s get into the big list:
iOS: you now can see the details of an item by tapping the (i) button in the bottom bar:
iOS: you can now add notes to anything! Add context to a link or file, let everyone in the space know what it’s about, what it’s for, etc. Coming soon to the Web version as well.
iOS: the card grid now supports the Moodboard layout. Moodboard is now available on both iOS and on the Web.
iOS: when you share to new.space from other apps, your pinned spaces will now appear at the top of the list to share into 🔝
iOS: you can now share WebArchive files into the app from Safari. When sharing in Safari, you can choose Options > WebArchive, and this will save a full, frozen-in-time snapshot of the page that anyone in the space can view. So even if someone your sharing with doesn’t have access to that website, they can read what you want them to read.
iOS bugfix: when the time rolls over to 12:01, make sure the Today space on the homescreen is accurate and has moved to the next day ⌚
Web: you can now do more while viewing your content larger. Rename, delete, react with emojis all in this view in this view. There are some other small tweaks that all add up to a great experience.
Web: our card grid got spruced up a bit, more things are labelled more clearly, like every note card has a “Note” label for example.
Web: we improved the initial loading time of new.space in your browser, which could mean it loads 3–5 times faster than before ⚡
Web: you can now install new.space to your homescreen on Android phones and we can’t wait to add even more features specific to Android as part of our PWA (progressive web app)
Web: you can now rename any type of content, click on the name of a file or link to give it a custom name. I use this sometimes to name a few items 1, 2, 3 so I can sort them in that order.
And many more performance improvements and optimizations across the board. Syncing between devices should be quicker and more reliable and catching up with changes after being offline should be faster too.
We also improved the design of our pages at new.space/features and new.space/use-cases – check them out and let us know if your use case isn’t covered there.
We are now marching toward signing into accounts on new.space for Web, this is our primary focus right now.
You can create or sign in to your account now on your iPhone using our iOS app – visit new.space/app – and any Spaces created while signed in do not auto-cleanup by default. So if you need a long-lived space, then create it on your iPhone first. And we cannot wait until you can do the same on the Web in your browser too 🙌
We’ll have more to say about the other advantages of the free account vs. anonymous usage this month. If you are not already subscribed, then signup here to be the first to know when you can start signing in on all your devices.
Thanks for continuing on this journey with us, as we attempt to tame the chaos of files and links across all the platforms and services we use everyday.
Happy sharing,
Nathan & Adam
