I want to show you what local AI in new.space can actually do today, because I think a lot of people don’t realize how capable it’s gotten.

Get a model on your device

First things first: tap on your avatar, then AI, then Local models. The Qwen models are the best performers on Apple devices right now. Download one, and you’re ready to go. That’s it. No API key, no subscription needed for local models – they’re free and unlimited.

Ask about what’s happening right now

Here’s something that surprises people: local AI in new.space can search the web. And when it does, that search runs on your device, from your internet connection. The query never touches our servers.

I tried this out the other day with something happening here in Berlin. BrewDog – the Scottish craft beer chain – just filed for insolvency in Germany. Their bars in Berlin and Hamburg are closing, and the brewery in Mariendorf is shutting down. I asked the local model about it in a Brainstorm, and it pulled in the details and gave me a solid summary.

That’s a real, breaking local news story, answered by an AI running entirely on my phone. Pretty wild.

Work with sensitive documents, privately

This is where local AI really shines. Add some documents to a space – financial statements, health records, tax paperwork, whatever you’d normally be nervous about sharing with an AI service – and ask questions about them. Summarize this. What’s the total here. Compare these two.

All of that processing happens on your device. The content in your spaces is end-to-end encrypted, and, when you’re using a local model, nothing unencrypted ever leaves your phone. We literally can’t see what you’re doing in your spaces, and we don’t want to.

Use the built-in document scanner to get going.

Translate, learn, practice

Use a local Brainstorm to translate between languages. Paste in a paragraph and ask for a translation. Or, if you’re learning a language, have the AI grade your homework or quiz you on vocabulary. It’s a patient tutor that happens to live on your phone and doesn’t report your mistakes to anyone.

Draft responses on-device

Got an important email to respond to? turn on “Email to Space”, forward it in, and then start a Brainstorm and ask for help drafting a reply. The email contents and the proposed draft are processed by AI entirely on your device. No cloud, no third party, just you and your phone working it out.

One thing I want to be clear about: our Brainstorms in new.space offer the same capabilities whether you’re using a cloud model or a local one. Web search, document context, everything. Start a Brainstorm in a space by either:

1. Create a new Brainstorm from the add (+ button) screen, select Perplexity as the model

2. Long press on an item, choose Brainstorm, and then ask Perplexity about the item you selected

3. Choose “Select items” in a space, select several, then tap the Brainstorm icon at the bottom to ask Perplexity about all of those items

Any new.space paid account of 1.99 per month or more has full access to Perplexity. Turn on “Advanced mode” to be able to choose exactly which Perplexity model you want to use (Sonar Pro or Sonar Reasoning).

And, you can use your own Perplexity account for free today by providing your Perplexity API key into your integration’s settings in new.space.

How to Get the Most Out of Perplexity

To unlock Perplexity’s full potential, be specific in your queries and lean into follow-up questions. The more detail you provide, the better the system can refine its search and deliver exactly what you need. You can add files, links, images, or notes to your Brainstorm to give Perplexity all the information it needs to find the information you're looking for. If you’re looking for something that changes rapidly (like tech product launches or market movements), include a time frame in your request. And don’t overlook the value of the citations — they’re not just proof, they’re springboards for deeper investigation.

Perplexity doesn’t just give you answers — it gives you confidence in those answers. By combining real-time retrieval with AI summarization, it turns every interaction into a fast, reliable research session. If your work depends on staying informed and credible, Perplexity is an indispensable ally.

The Privacy Promise We're Keeping

In an era where every interaction seems to flow through someone else's servers, we believe users should have the choice to keep their thoughts truly private. Local LLMs represent more than just a technical feature. They are a commitment to user autonomy. When you run a Brainstorm locally, your ideas, questions, and conversations never leave your device. No cloud processing, no data transmission, no third-party access. It's AI assistance that respects your boundaries, because your midnight brainstorming session about the novel you're writing or your business strategy thoughts should remain yours alone.

What you can do today

Download a local model by tapping on your name, “Integrations,” then “On-Device AI.” I recommend the Qwen 3 model today – the 4B (4 billion) version is a good model. It can help with creative writing, it can answer general fact questions, summarize documents, etc.

Not all models will be available on all devices. Some of the most powerful models require the newest and most powerful devices. If you have an older device or are low in disk space, the 1.7B will work, but will make more mistakes.

After downloading the model, go ahead and turn on Airplane Mode, then create a new Brainstorm. Having control over your data and being able to choose when to use online models vs offline is such a cool super power.

Some things I’ve been using Brainstorms for in the last month:

• Language Learning Practice: Create conversations in the language you're studying, practice translations, or upload text files in foreign languages for help with comprehension. The AI can explain grammar, suggest more natural phrasing, or role-play everyday situations like ordering at a restaurant or asking for directions.

• Code Review and Debugging Partner: Save code snippets as bookmarks or files, then use Brainstorms to rubber-duck debug, get suggestions for refactoring, or understand error messages. It's like having a patient senior developer available 24/7, even on airplane mode during a commute.

• Recipe Development from Bookmarks: Save recipe bookmarks throughout the week, then use Brainstorms to plan meals, create shopping lists, or modify recipes based on dietary restrictions. Ask it to suggest ingredient substitutions or help you scale recipes up or down for different group sizes.

Local LLMs are currently for paid subscribers

At the moment, local models require a small monthly or yearly subscription. Why? Quality-assurance and uncertainty. Sure, you can download an app right now that will show you 100 different models to download, and most of which either are too small to do anything useful or will crash often depending on the context. That’s not good enough for us.

• We only ship models we’ve benchmarked, stress-tested and optimized for battery life and thermals. We are putting in the lab time with all of our test phones.

• The world of LLMs is changing quickly, different models ship with entirely new, incompatible architectures (Gemma 3 cannot run with code written for Gemma 2), and multi-modal capabilities are still evolving. We are keeping up and will make sure you get the latest, most capable, most efficient models on your device that actually work.

Opening up to the free tier is absolutely on the roadmap. We are committed to making the latest local LLMs work great on all the latest phones, and you can support our efforts at 1.99 per month or 19.99 per year.

Under the hood

Running a modern LLM locally isn’t plug-and-play. We ran into memory ceilings (the 8 GB RAM minimum for some models is real), thermal throttling, and bizarre bugs. Apple calls the same pain points “strict device requirements” for its Apple Intelligence rollout; Google engineers optimized Gemini Nano for their very latest Pixel phone with their custom chip first, then back-ported to older devices; and most of the tech giants are just relying on their datacenters to do the work, sending everything over the network each time.

As we solve problems and develop optimizations, we're committed to contributing back to the community that has made local AI possible. When we figure out how to make a model run 20% faster or use 30% less memory, that knowledge belongs to everyone.

Looking Forward: The Future is Local

We're just getting started. Our roadmap includes expanding model selection, improving performance across a wider range of devices, and eventually making basic local AI features available to all users. We're also exploring ways to let users bring their own models and customize their local AI experience even further. Privacy-conscious AI isn't a niche feature—we believe it's the future. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, the ability to choose where our data is processed becomes not just important, but essential. We're building for that future, one optimized model at a time.

As Amanda Guinzburg helped show, AI’s utility comes from its remarkable persuasiveness, which in turn comes from its unwavering projection of confidence, over-the-top flattery, and feigned empathy. I’ve had many conversations with AI that turned out just like Amanda’s: a promising start followed by my growing awareness that the AI was hallucinating and just telling me what it thought I wanted to hear. The issue is compounded by how often AI gets things exactly right. I find myself often lulled into a false sense of confidence in AI’s abilities because of how often it’s correct.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot aren’t helping us use them correctly. They provide us with suggested prompts like “write a first draft” or “prep for an interview” or “critique an argument”, which just lead us to getting used to writing short, simple prompts for AI, even though long, detailed prompts seem to result in the best answers.

When I’ve had success with the kinds of tasks Amanda tried, it’s usually because of two strategies I’ve used:

1. Always tell the AI to include direct quotes in its response to support its arguments. This helps ground the AI in the documents I’ve asked it about, and it helps me quickly notice when the AI is hallucinating. An advantage of using new.space’s Brainstorms on iOS is that new.space automatically fetches the content of links and provides it directly to the AI.

2. Have one AI critique another’s response. This is one of my favorite uses for new.space’s Brainstorms. Asking Claude to critique ChatGPT, for example, has helped me find many inaccuracies in ChatGPT’s original response. Also, since every AI has a different tone, it’s nice to be able to compare how the different AIs answer a given question. Second (or third or fourth) opinions are always valuable.

Just for fun, I put together a quick Brainstorm showing how Amanda’s original question worked in new.space. Judge it for yourself and let me know how you think it did.

Three ways I'm using Brainstorms daily

1. Instant knowledge access

Instead of hunting through search results, I ask directly. Today I needed to create a new burn down spreadsheet and I asked: “Can you refresh my memory of what formulas will help me today?” Seconds later, I had the formulas I needed, like the one below, and could move on with my work.

3. Task planning and organization

Every Monday morning, I dictate a Brainstorm like this: “Help me organize what I need to accomplish this week…” The AI helps me break down my goals, suggests task groupings, and creates a structured plan I can then extract into a dedicated note.

For writers, this might be the most valuable tool you're not using. When I'm stuck in my writing or want honest feedback, I use this powerful phrase: “Roast this text”

The AI immediately analyzes my writing, pointing out redundancies, awkward phrasing, and missed opportunities with sometimes brutal (but helpful) honesty. After the initial sting wears off, I've consistently found my writing improves.

Try it yourself:

1. Long press on a Note

2. Choose Brainstorm

3. Ask it to “Roast this”

4. Take a deep breath and read the feedback 😆

For maximum benefit, follow up with “How would you improve this?” or ask a different AI provider for “another take on this text.”

I’ve been collecting my ideas and resolutions for the year into a few spaces. Some recipes I want to try, goals I want to achieve, things I want to learn, movies I want to watch, and more.

One of my big goals for this year is to learn enough German to pass the B1 test and get my certificate 💪. I really enjoy using Brainstorms to help me along. Not only do they help me come up with a learning plan, they also explain difficult concepts to me, generate fill-in-the-blank tests on whatever topic I want, and teach me important vocabulary.

I want to make a few changes to our flat; one of which is to hang some new photos. I am having conversations with my partner about the plans in a space where I have links to printers, frames, and even some photos I want to get printed.

And I love that I can take my time and accumulate notes as I’m discovering resources and content online. The share extension is my #1 MVP, love it.

A lot, actually. On January 4th this year we released the new.space for iOS beta to subscribers of this newsletter. After that, we shipped a flood of updates. I’m skipping many small tweaks and fixes here to pull together this already sizable list of things we built this year. It is a nice pile of stuff, I’m proud of it. So how does this all tie back to the Shareup team? How are we using all these things to make new.space?

Get new.space for iOS

The loop

When you look at projects in the modern workplace, a pattern emerges. Work begins with planning, transitions to execution, shared to the team for feedback, and planning begins again. This loop continues until completion. Various methodologies, processes, and best practices exist for project management, though I’ve found most of them to be overly complex; burdened by rules, ceremony, and structure. When we design and build features for new.space, we are always thinking about this loop and how to make sharing, planning, and feedback as easy and smooth for teams as possible.

Finding the calm

Going back to the title of this post, “Finding a calmer workplace with new.space”—what does that mean? The Shareup team use new.space for everything. Even stuff it isn’t particularly good at (yet), we find it fun to push the boundaries of what it can do and how it works. We feel like we’ve built something that reduces workplace stress, unnecessary noise, and increases our productivity & focus. We are super proud of that, but the journey isn’t complete yet. We’ve got a lot in the works like: annotations, comment threads, themes, an activity center, better notifications, and a lot of exciting capabilities that we want to add to items and Spaces that we just aren’t ready to share yet. We would love to hear how you are using new.space in your projects, what you would like to see in the next year, and hear about your process in your projects.

Create a new Space

Sliding into the details

We made a tiny change to how details works, but this tiny change has big implications—so I think it is worth going into. Previously, when viewing the details for an item, you had to reach up and tap the ‘i’ button, where it would then show the screen. We found that not only was this annoying to reach, but it also just made us interact with the details less. Going back to the drawing board, we came up with a new concept for showing details that looks (and feels…look how springy 😍) really nice.

There are some other nice details here that are worth noting. Hitting the plus button here reveals the same reaction and note buttons. However now there is also a Brainstorm button. We didn’t cover this in the Brainstorm post, but you can create a Brainstorm here with the context of the item automatically added.

Feelin’ good

We’ve added a bunch of small haptic responses to interactions in the app. Sliding the details view up and down has a slight vibration. Similarly, tapping reactions also give a small bit of feedback.

We’ve also added a few tiny helpful buttons for planning your week. Selecting items now have a special ‘Add to Today’ button. Similarly, you can long press any item in your Today Space and ‘Add to Tomorrow’ to help stay on top of your weekly plans.

Upcoming Update

We are so happy to have shipped this big update to you all. Our team has been using new.space as a central hub for all of our work. We’ve got many exciting features coming up that help folks share more effectively, gather & give precise feedback, and form plans for what needs to happen next. Before those however, we’ve felt like there is a need for…some color. We’ve got some themes in the works! So stay tuned to for more info on how you will be able to customize your Spaces.

Create a new Space

A powerful new card type

So what is a Brainstorm? A Brainstorm is a new type of card in new.space where you can add items from a Space as context to ask questions, gain insights and generate new documents. These Brainstorms are collaborative by design, meaning everyone in the Space can contribute to and see the results. Additionally, due to how sharing anything with new.space works, this is one of the best ways to share insights from an LLM with others. We call it collaborative thinking, supported by AI.

Another special thing to note, you can use either ChatGPT or Claude or both! Just tap the provider and toggle between which ever provider is better for the task at hand.

Things Brainstorms can do

This sounds nice, but what are some real-world use-cases for Brainstorms? Well we’ve added some ideas to our use-case page, and I’d like to talk about a few here as well. I’ll use a workplace example, something that might be great for personal use and a way to use it with your team.

Share the feedback

One way we’ve been using new.space as a team is to find patterns in feedback from bug reports and feedback on social media we’ve received. We add them to a Support Space and generate summaries to find patterns, translate feedback and responses from non-English messages, and finally create an anonymized version of that Brainstorm to share back with the team. This has been a great way for us to deliver fast and effective responses, and also helps the whole team feel like there is clarity on any potential bugs or UX issues.

Level Up Learning

One way a few of us have been using Brainstorms is to enhance our language learning capabilities. You can just add your homework or resources to a Space, fill out the answers and then create a brainstorm to check your results. Before taking my German B1 TELC exam, I asked it to create some practice material to study with. Similarly, it is great for checking writing for grammar mistakes and ensuring things are written in a correct tone.

Automate boring stuff

Planning things is always hard, especially bigger projects. While a Brainstorm probably can’t help you deduce an accurate deadline or estimate, it can help you automate some of the more difficult or boring tasks involved with planning. For instance, you can add spreadsheets and reports to a Space and then add them to a Brainstorm to create summaries, find standout moments in the data, or reveal patterns. Additionally, once you have a plan in place, you can ask the Brainstorm to create a calendar file, and it will generate one—just long-press on it to save it to your calendar or add it to a Space!

Cheaper than the competition

So how much does this cost, and what are the privacy implications with all this? Great questions. You do not need a Space+ subscription to use Brainstorms, however you do need to add your own API key. We’ve created a whole page to guide you through how to do this here. It might sound daunting if you’ve never added an API key to something, but I assure you it is very easy and very fast. Probably faster than buying something on Amazon. Additionally, you don’t need to have an expensive subscription with OpenAI or Anthropic. Just add $5 to your account and begin using the service. Using the models over the API is much more cost efficient, and we’ve found that on average ~50 Brainstorms costs less than $0.50. Pretty nice.

As for privacy, we take this topic extremely seriously. We wrote an FAQ to cover the details, but up front this is how it works. Your queries to the models only travel from your device and the provider, they never cross over our servers. Also, both Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s privacy policies declare that data sent over the API is never used to train models. Using it today

As I mentioned before, you do not need a special subscription or plan to use Brainstorms. They are free for all new.space users with an account on iOS today, and will be coming very soon to Web (currently read-only). To create your first one, just use the + button! We are very excited about Brainstorms, as they have changed the way that our team uses new.space. There are five services added as integrations in this banger of an update, and we are going to focus on three of them today: GitHub, Figma, and Slack. We use each of these services at Shareup to coordinate, design, and build new.space. Let’s look at what each integration does, and how we’ve been using them to be more effective in our daily workflow.

Getting more from GitHub

We love GitHub. It is a staple piece of software that we use to manage all our code. Before building the integration for GitHub into new.space, adding a pull request link to a project did not render a particularly useful card. We still added the links to keep track of things, but the status of a pull request still had to be inspected manually—which meant that we ended up just keeping the tab open, which is the exact opposite goal of new.space.

With this integration into new.space, you can see the status of a pull request right from the grid view. Opening the details of the card now also yields extra info about who opened it, any tags and lots of other info. We use this integration every day in our various project Spaces to help us keep tabs on what the status of work—try it out and let us know how you are using it! Focusing with Figma

Figma is a fantastic product. We use Figma to design every aspect of new.space, and with the ability to work cooperatively in realtime, it is an indispensable tool in our workflow. We built the new.space integration for Figma because we found that sharing artboard links do not generate particularly useful previews (you might spot a pattern emerging here).

With the Figma integration for new.space, your links to a specific artboard will show that artboard as the preview, instead of the thumbnail of the project overview. Stay tuned for more updates here on how to give and receive feedback on the work that you share.

Seeing into Slack

Our team organizes, shares, and collaborates on most work we do that isn’t code or design right within new.space. Sometimes, however, we just need to have a quick back and forth chat to hash out details and figure things out. For moments like these, we use Slack to communicate. Our projects are organized into channels, and with the Slack integration for new.space, we now put a special new chat card right within the Space as well! This is great for quickly scanning what is new, or to pick up context from where you left off without getting distracted by whatever else might be going on in Slack. Right now the integration is read-only, we’d love to hear how you are using and what features you would like to see added here.

You said there were five integrations…

I mentioned at the start of this post that there are five integrations that launched with this update. Today we just covered the first three, and in next week’s post we’ll be doing a deep dive into Brainstorms—an exciting new type of card we’ve added to new.space that has completely changed how we work with content in our Spaces. Remember, these three integrations mentioned here are available right now for new.space on the web and for new.space for iOS. You can use them with your team today, completely for free. Designed for flexibility

We designed the stylings for Markdown in new.space to keep the formatting marks inline. We found that handling the styles in this way gave the best experience, flexibility, and predictability when sharing and exporting notes. We are using Markdown in the GitHub flavor, so here is a cheat sheet if you need a quick guide. Tables and images aren’t supported, so just keep that in mind. Personally, it feels great to create notes with headings, lists, and emphasis!

Check that off!

Beyond simple **bold**, _italic_ and ~~strikethough~~, there are a lot of new UX improvements to how notes function. If you create a list with dashes or bullets you will be able to just hit return to automatically create the next item in the list. Also, using the standard list format of: `- [ ]` gives you the ability to create to-do lists in your notes. Just tap the area between the brackets when not editing to check the items off, pretty nifty!

What else is in the update?

As I mentioned in the opening, there is a lot to unpack in this update. Don’t wait around for me to tell you about it though, check out the update and explore the integrations, new brainstorm cards, the new details view design, and a whole lot more. Get new.space

The Integration Center

The initial step to getting started with integrations in new.space is the upcoming integrations center. This is a first look at how it functions, but expect more services and apps to exist here in the future to connect your workflow to new.space.

The Integrations

If you click on any of the integration here, you'll see a little preview explaining what exactly the integration looks like. From there, you can connect and authenticate the service with new.space. One pain-point our team found when working with Figma + new.space was that sharing artboards did not generate particularly good thumbnails. For most projects, we would only get an overview of the document, rather than the specifically shared artboard which made it difficult to get good feedback and share ideas.

With this integration, you can now see the item directly in full resolution. There are more layers to this integration that we are working on, like comments from Figma surfacing in new.space—we’ll talk more about that closer to launch..

As for Github, we similarly felt like there was so little info one could gain from just linking a pull request in a Space. We set out then to design and build a grid-view card that would give a nice overview of the PR, and also created a detail view layout for all the info that one could view in new.space. It looks great.

What’s next?

We are putting the final touches on these integrations and building a few _much requested_ **features** that will roll out [soon](https://new.space). I'll leave it there, if you have any questions about how these integrations will work, ideas on what you would like to see next, or just want to say 'hullo', do so in the comments.

Inspired by this, I want to quickly highlight a few reasons why I think new.space is better than WeTransfer, Dropbox Transfer, and other file sending services.

1) Private by default

Unlike WeTransfer, Dropbox, or others: Shareup cannot see any of the files added to spaces in new.space. Everything is end-to-end encrypted, which means the files are completely encrypted before they leave your browser or phone. We store the encrypted versions and only the person you share the space with can decrypt them.

Other file sharing services suggest they can’t see your files by saying they use encryption while in transit. Others sometimes say they use encryption at rest. However, in both cases, this still means those services can read, interpret, and scan your files.

When things are encrypted on device—like they are with new.space, then no one between you and the receiver can ever see them 💪

2) No sign up, not even an email

Open new.space and get a brand new space ready to go. Add up to 1GB of files, links, and notes to the space without ever signing up or even providing your email. The maximum file size for anonymous spaces is 250MB per file.

When you want to add more and/or larger files, then signup for a free account by providing your email address or Sign in with Apple. Every free account created during our early adopter period (ending at the end of Oct) will be able to store up to 5GB, and has no file size limit. You can share a 5GB file without paying anything.

Need even more space? Then subscribe to Space+ for $99 per year and store up to 100GB. 📈 Tap on your name at the top of your list of spaces, then Membership to upgrade. 🚀

3) Include more context with bookmarks and notes

Include any relevant links or bookmarks or write a quick note to explain the purpose or goals of the space. Links and notes do not count against your account’s used storage, so go for it.

One of my favorite ways to use a space is to request some files from someone. I’ll open new.space, name it “Put the files for [the Project] here,” and add a note to explain which files I need and when I need them by.

And since I have the iOS app installed, I’ll get a push notification right when the files are added to the space so I won’t have to guess “did they send me those files yet?” anymore 🤔
